The Brambles are Back

There once was an old woman who lived in my cottage. She had so many blackberries she didn't know what to do. Unfortunately when she passed, the new owners cleared the yard (or so they thought!)

I was talking to a neighbor the other day who was telling me stories about a lady who lived in my cottage a few years ago. He said that she was in her 90s. She would have him push the ends of her blackberry bushes into the ground to propagate them. He talked as though she had many plants all over the backyard. I was sad that none of the old brambles had survived. (The plants cost about $10 each here.) Fast forward to me working in my garden yesterday, and guess what I found in the yard near the river? I saw at least 11 blackberry bushes along the river's ledge. I was able to eat three ripe berries. Now I see jam in my future!
