Organizing the Kitchen on a Budget Part 1

One of the biggest difficulties for me in the kitchen has been the failure in my recipe storage system (or the lack of one.) I could never find what I wanted so I just didn’t bother with cooking from scratch. It was too much trouble. Now I realize how much fun I have been missing in trying out recipes I have clipped from magazines or old cookbooks I purchased at estate sales. What caused this change in my attitude? I got rid of that tiny file box and the manila folder I had been stashing them into for years.
For my new system, I reused an old wood cd holder. I added an additional piece of wood to the bottom and some dividers for categories I actually use. (I took the large size ABC notecard dividers and wrote on the backs of them with a permanent marker.) I have the basic categories, but also include sections for canning, brownies, and popcorn. It is amazing the amount of recipes out there for these. I also have a back section for recipes that do not have a category “home.” As I test the recipes, I write changes or adjustments directly on them and re-file when I am finished. Also if the recipe is one I found online that I liked, then I must print it out or I am never going to use it. If the recipe is a flop, then it is filed into the recycle bin immediately.
This new box is large enough to hold even small pamphlets or regular size sheets of paper folded in half in it, but is still not cumbersome. It isn’t quite perfect though since smaller recipes can slip out of the front or back. I am currently working on solutions to stop this. My total cost for my new system was ZERO plus better health from better food.
