My New Skill

Today I decided that while it was raining outside I would try to make a cage to go over a 12" section of my garden bed. My hope was that this would help stop some of the bugs from eating my plants. Last week I purchased some garden fencing that I thought would work well for a cage. I used my metal snips to cut two 1'x3' pieces that I bent into U shapes. I put one on top of the other to form a box shape. Unfortunately the wire that I had was not stiff enough to maintain my desired shape. I looked around the house for something I could scavenge to use as support. I found two pieces of wood in the laundry room that were each 2'. Next I sat for 20 minutes trying to decide what I could do to get four 12" pieces. Finally it occurred to me that a few years ago my child, who was around 13 years old, had received a hand saw as a gift. I have never had someone show me how to use one. It may seem like a simple tool requiring no electricity, but it was scary for some reason nonetheless.  I used the edge of my back steps as the cutting support, and cut the pieces to the needed length. I was amazed at how easy it was to cut the wood. I managed to make the two cuts without any trips to the emergency room, and one section of my garden now has a new cage. You may be laughing as you read this, but this was a big step to doing things for myself.
